Fox The Kid

La primera vez que escuche a esta banda fue por pura curiosidad pues me salio de sugerencias en Spotify justo después de haber terminado de escuchar a Voltar .. Siempre he sido del pensamiento que hay que apoyar la música nacional y mucho mas si suena un tanto diferente a lo que ya estamos acostumbrados. Habia estado queriendo entrevistarlos y así fue como una vez mas el ser paciente logra llegar con sus frutos. Fox The Kid es una banda salvadoreña bajo la influencia de sonidos entre punk, garage y grunge con letras y melodías llenas de armonías rítmicas y bien equilibradas conformada por Rodrigo de 33 años tocando la batería,  Víctor 32 años, guitarra/vocalista y Kike de 23 años designado al bajo/coros.
He aqui adonde comienza esta pequeña platica que logre tener con ellos despues de que ellos bajaran del stage, asi conocen un poco mas acerca de la trayectoria de cada uno y su proyecto.

Plural: Cuanto tiempo tiene cada uno de tocar los instrumentos designados?
Kike: Aproximadamente 10 años, 15 años de estar tocando el bajo.
Plural: Y solo el bajo tocas?
Kike: No también toco guitarra y batería pero mi instrumento por naturaleza es el bajo.
Víctor: Creo que desde los 14 años toco la guitarra, casi 20 años.
Rodrigo: Yo toco batería desde los 18 años, tengo 15 años tocando batería y siempre lo he hecho en bandas de punk.
Plural: En que bandas de punk contame.
Víctor: EN TODAS hahahaha.
Rodrigo: He tocado con una banda de Oi, que se llamaba Resistencia Oi, con Los Criminis
Plural: Y aun tocas con ellos? (Los Criminis).
Rodrigo: No, ya no eso fue hace años, fueron mis inicios, fue mi escuela, aprendí a tocar batería con pura banda, no estudiando ni nada, por puro espíritu, yo solo.
Víctor: Pero tu papa toca la bateria.
Rodrigo: Si, mi papa en efecto toca bateria pero no me enseño.
Plural: Ahhh pero ya lo traías, la coordinación hace que la batería no sea tan fácil, a ver Víctor, como aprendiste tu a tocar la guitarra?
Víctor:  Igual solo.
Kike: En mi caso fue como ascendiendo de instrumento, primero comencé con el bajo igual solo, viendo otros amigos, viendo otras bandas; empece con la guitarra y evolucione a batería pero siempre me mantuve con el bajo, bien natural sin estudio ni nada mas que todo viendo, escuchando ,tocando y así fue como comencé.

La banda dio sus inicios en el 2015 y existían bajo otro proyecto el cual era llamado ¨Polaroids¨ siempre los mismos miembros pero diferente genero de música y creyeron que la mejor estrategia era cambiarse de nombre puesto que querían satisfacer ciertas necesidades pues la parte acústica si era algo que quieren seguir explorando.

Plural:  Como definirían el sonido de la banda?
Víctor: Estamos tratando de hacer una mezcla de todo verdad, como de tal vez un poco punk y cuando grabamos el primer EP, las 3 canciones que están en Spotify era lo que teníamos y a partir de eso dijimos el próximo disco que sea mas sucio, mas crudo, si meterle mas stoner rock, pero siempre con un poco de punk mas rápido tener de todo, estamos buscando aun el sonido que le queremos dejar.

Plural: Influencias musicales.
Víctor: Un montón.
Plural: Influencias para la banda.
Víctor, Kike: Royal Blood.
Rodrigo: Rancid, tambien el Ska, mi gusto es bien diferente a los que a Kike y a Víctor les gusta.
Plural: Y entonces a ustedes dos que les gusta?
Víctor: Mira, venimos de la misma raíz.
Rodrigo: Una banda que me pueda gustar parecido a lo que a ellos también es JoyDivision.
Víctor: Si cabal, JoyDivision; De ahí no se mas psicodélico como pinkfloyd ondas así que decís ¨ok hay que tomar como esto¨.
Kike: En lo personal bandas como A Day To Remember, Greenday, entre muchas otras bandas Punk Rock.
Victor: Es que si hay un montón, son demasiadas.
Rodrigo: Te voy a dar un punto de vista de lo que yo pienso de lo que tocamos, es una mescolanza de las influencias de cada uno pero al final es la gente que pueden decir mas o menos como sonamos, así como decís, que tenemos influencias punk,  creo que no tenemos un genero definido, al inicio era una mezcolanza de grunge y punk pero en realidad no esta definido un genero simplemente.
Víctor: Al  final unas canciones parecen sacadas de Nirvana por ejemplo, o bien noventeras, tal vez eso si lo queremos mantener. Las ultimas canciones viste que son bien grungeras por ese camino nos estamos influenciando.
Kike: Cada quien aporta un estilo diferente, ya sea porque hemos estado en otras bandas y escuchamos música diferente, por ejemplo Vik también esta en otras bandas, yo también he estado en otras bandas.
Plural: Cual era el nombre de la banda?
Kike: ¨El Sueño de Camila¨ que era post rock instrumental, totalmente diferente.
Rodrigo: Somos de la generación de el Sueño de Camila, y tocábamos en Nuevas Ilusiones Víctor y yo, entonces todo eso es una mescolanza de un montón de cosas, algo tenemos en común nosotros que congeniamos y podemos hacer esto.

Plural: Las letras quien las compone?
Víctor: Yo.
Plural: Y en que te inspiras?
Víctor: En las pupusas hahahahaha fíjate que en todo la verdad, no hay como un genero especifico.
Plural: Y como decidis cual va salir en ingles, y cual en español?
Víctor: Fíjate que al inicio este proyecto era en ingles, pero ahora las nuevas son en español entonces el próximo disco será full español.

Plural: Cual de todas las canciones ha sido su favorita y porque es especial para ustedes la canción que escogieron?
Kike: Mi favorita es bueno tengo 2 favoritas la de ¨Never Coming Back¨
Plural: Del primer álbum verdad? Esa es buenaaa.
Kike: La energía que le ponemos y ¨Stoner Love¨ me gusta un montón por la energía que se le meten a las canciones y el movimiento que se le puede dar.
Víctor: Híjole todas… no se favoritas… teníamos desde Diciembre de no tocar; pero ¨Azul¨ va ser de mis favoritas porque ha marcado un giro en el estilo, es bien diferente, la energía con que la tocamos.
Rodrigo: Este es el primer toque después de un año y medio de no tocar, pero para mi tambien ¨Azul¨ y ¨Breathe¨ tiene algo de lo que tocaba antes un poco y ¨Azul¨ tiene algo nuevo que estamos experimentando hacer pedazos largos instrumentales que te envuelvan un poco, todas me gustan pero esas dos son las que mas disfruto tocar.

Plural: Víctor, cuanto tiempo te toca componer cada canción?
Víctor: Depende, hay unas que salen rápido.
Plural: Que tan rápido?
Víctor: Un par de horas.
Plural: Que ondas te llegan chipasos y empezas a brainstorm y se va armando?
Víctor: Cabal así.
Plural: Que talentoso que sos!!!
Víctor: O son fragmentos que he tenido guardados por que tengo un cuadernito en el que escribo solo para canciones de ideas de todo, tengo un cuaderno viejo que tiene de todo, y de ahí agarro de otros cuadernos, es divertido.

Plural: Y para sacar la melodía y juntarlo con la canción como le hacen para ponerse de acuerdo?
Víctor: Mira siempre hay una base que tenemos ahí ya como medio ensayada y de repente le ponemos la letra sobre la canción o a veces al revés mira tengo esta letra pero no la canción y ya aportamos todos.
Rodrigo: Hay ensayos buenos y hay ensayos malos, en ensayos malos solo repasamos canciones y ensayos buenos cuando de repente creas algo que viene de la nada que te pones a tocar algo y este le metió la guitarra y el bajo y así nos acoplamos; comienza el jam y suena chivo y vamos ordenamos las ideas.
Víctor: Sacamos las partes, el verso, el coro, el final.

Plural: Cada cuanto ensayan y por cuanto tiempo?
Víctor: Pues tratamos de ensayar una vez a la semana, ahorita que estamos retomando todo es mas intensivo.
Kike: 2 horas y media mas o menos.

Plural: Aparte de la música que otra cosa hacen, a que se dedica cada uno?
Rodrigo: Me dedico a la música, bueno ahorita estoy apostándole al proyecto, tenemos metas porque queremos tener bastantes toques y salir del país, tenemos como visión llegar a México es la meta que nos hemos planteado, creo que Víctor me apoya en esto y no se antes de estar aquí de lleno con ellos estaba con tocando otra banda por dinero y nada que ver con este rollo por que a eso me dedico
Víctor: Es importante y ya hemos hablado que este proyecto va en serio y tenemos buenos deseos hacia el de meternos a full y no como un hobby de hecho como Fox The Kid ya hemos ido a Honduras 2 veces a 2 festivales, queremos mantener eso. Ademas de eso soy emprendedor, un diseñador y tengo una pequeña boutique creativa con mi hna.
Kike: Yo igual que Vik, tengo mi pequeña empresa con unos amigos que nos encargamos de hacer producciones audiovisuales tanto videos fotografía diseño, y aparte que también trabajo para una agencia de publicidad.

Plural: Planes al futuro
Víctor: Hacer mas giras, mas toques a nivel Centroamericano, de hecho a Costa Rica hemos tenido invitación pero no ha sido nada concreto, queremos armar la gira exacta cuando tengamos el disco.

Plural: Como artistas independientes que son adonde es que ustedes sienten que han encontrado mas apoyo?
Víctor: Siempre andas buscando nuevo publico verdad pero ahorita queremos llamar de nuevo la atención de los que nos han escuchado desde el principio, aquí estamos y tenemos nuevas canciones que es lo mas importante que ya no estamos tocando lo mismo; entonces creo que con eso hay que mantenerlos alegres y la respuesta de este show fue bastante buena y vimos a la gente contenta y al final eso es lo importante.. ahora es salir a buscar mas gente y mas apoyo de marcas y algún patrocinio para llegar a mas publico y hacer mas conciertos y generar para hacer auto sostenible a la banda.

Plural: Para cuando sale el disco?
Víctor: Estos shows que estamos dando son para recaudar dinero para el disco y por eso mismo es nuestro interes el buscar nuevo target de publico, educar a la gente que llega sobre que tan importante es para nosotros que consuman merch y discos. Y ese gran llamado a todos si nos ven tocar que siempre estén apoyándonos y pendientes de los shows, porque sin ellos no existimos.

The first time I heard this band was because of my curiosity since it came out of suggestions on Spotify just after I finished listening to Voltar. I´ve always been of the thought that we must support local music and much more if it sounds different to what we are used to listen. You have no idea how long I had been wanting to interview them and that was how once again being patient finally pays off. Fox The Kid is a Salvadoran band under the influence of sounds between punk, garage and grunge with lyrics and melodies full of rhythmic harmonies and well-balanced conformed by Rodrigo of 33 years who plays the drums, Victor 32 years, guitar/singer and Kike who is the 23-year-old who is designated bass/chorus.
Here is where this little talk starts right after they got off the stage, please join me to get to know a little more about the trajectory of each one of the band members and their project.

Plural: How much time does each one has playing your designated instruments?
Kike: Approximately 10 years, 15 years of playing the bass.
Plural: And you only play the bass?
Kike: No, I also play guitar and drums but my instrument by nature is bass.
Víctor: I think since I was 14 years old I play the guitar, almost 20 years.
Rodrigo: I’ve been playing drums since I was 18 years old, I’ve been playing drums for 15 years and I’ve always played in punk bands.
Plural: In which bands of punk?
Rodrigo: I played with an Oi band, which name was ¨Resistencia Oi¨ and with ¨Los Criminis¨
Plural: And do you still play with them? (The Criminis).
Rodrigo: No, I used to play with them years ago, it was my beginning, it was my school, I learned to play drums through band, not studying or anything, pure spirit, by myself.
Víctor: But your dad plays the drums.
Rodrigo: Yes, my dad actually plays drums but he did not teach me.
Plural: Ahhh, but you already had it in you, it takes a lot of coordination skills to play the drums which is not so easy, Víctor, how did you learn to play the guitar?]Víctor: The same.
Kike: In my case it was like ascending the instrument, first I started with the same bass solo, seeing other friends, watching other bands; I started with the guitar and evolved to drums but I always stayed with the bass, very natural without study or anything more than everything watching, listening, playing and that’s how I started.

The band started in 2015 and it existed under another project name which was called «Polaroids» always with the same band members but different genre of music and they believed that the best strategy was to change their name since they wanted to satisfy certain needs as the acoustic part it was something they wanted to continue
exploring.

Plural: How would you define the sound of the band?
Víctor: We are trying to make a mix of all, like maybe a little punk and when we recorded the first EP, the 3 songs that are on Spotify was what we had and from that we said the next album we want it to be dirtier, more raw, with more stoner rock influence, but always with a bit of punk with faster drums, we are still looking for the sound we want to own.

Plural: Musical influences.
Víctor: A lot.
Plural: Influences for the band.
Victor & Kike: Royal Blood.
Rodrigo: Rancid, also Ska, my taste is very different from the ones that Kike and Víctor own.
Plural: What do you guys listen to?
Víctor: Look, we come from the same root.
Rodrigo: A band that I like like that they also do is JoyDivision.
Víctor: Yes, JoyDivision; I like a bit more psychedelic like Pink Floyd waves that make you go say «ok you have to sound or take inspiration to sound a bit more like this».
Kike: Personally, bands like A Day To Remember, Greenday, among many other Punk Rock bands.
Victor: The things is that they are too many to choose from.
Rodrigo: I’m going to give you a point of view of what I think, it’s a mess of the influences of each one but in the end it’s the people who can say more or less how we sound, as you say, we have punk influences, I think we do not have a defined genre, at the beginning it was a hodgepodge of grunge and punk but in reality a genre that isn´t simply defined.
Víctor: In the end some songs seem to be taken out of Nirvana for example, they´ve got that 90´s sound maybe that’s what we want to keep. The last songs you heard it was very grunge in that way we are influencing ourselves.
Kike: Everyone contributes a different style, because we have been in other bands and we listen to different music, for example Vik is also in other bands, I have also been in other bands.

Plural: What was the name of the band?
Kike: ¨El Sueño de Camila¨ we played post instrumental rock, completely different.
Rodrigo: We are from the generation of the ¨El Sueño de Camila¨, and we played in ¨Nuevas Ilusiones¨with Victor, then it was all a mess of a lot of things, we have something in common that we get along and we are able to pull it off.
Plural: Who writes the lyrics?
Víctor: I do.
Plural: And where do you get your inspiration from?
Víctor: From pupusas hahahahaha.
Plural: And how do you decide which one will come out in English, and which one in Spanish?
Víctor: At the beginning this project was in English, but now the new songs are in Spanish so the next album will be full Spanish.

Plural: Which of all the songs has been your favorite and why is the song you chose special for you?
Kike: I have 2 favorites, one is «Never Coming Back»
Plural: From the first album, right? That one is great.
Kike: The energy that we put to it and ¨Stoner Love¨ I ​​like it a lot because of the energy that we put into the songs and the movement that can be given to it.
Víctor: All of tem … I don´t know … we had not played since December; but «Azul» is going to be my favorite because it has marked a completely drastic change of style, it’s very different, the energy with which we play it.
Rodrigo: This is the first time we play after a year and a half of not playing at all, but for me also «Azul» and «Breathe»  they have something that  they both have; I used to play a bit before and «Azul» has something new that we are experiencing to play longer instrumental pieces that wrap you a little, I like them all but those are the ones that I enjoy playing the most.

Plural: Victor, how long does it takes you to write each song?
Víctor: It depends, there are some that come out fast.
Plural: How fast?
Victor: A couple of hours.
Plural: So how´s the process you get certain brainsparks and you start to brainstorm and you put it together?
Victor: Exactly, like that.
Plural: You´re very talented!
Víctor: Or they´re  also fragments that I have kept, I have a small notebook in which I write only for the purpose of having ideas of everything, I have an old notebook that has everything, and from there I grab other notebooks, it’s fun.

Plural: And to get the melody and join it how do you guys get to an agreement?
Víctor: Look, there is always a base that we have there already rehearsed and suddenly we put the lyrics on the song or sometimes it’s the other way around, or its like ¨I have this lyric but don´t have the melody and we all contribute.
Rodrigo: There are good rehearsals and there are bad ones, in the bad rehearsals we only review and replay songs and in good rehearsals it´s when suddenly you create something that comes from nowhere and then you play something you add the guitar and bass and so we join and the jam begins.
Víctor: We take out the parts, the verse, the chorus, the end.
Plural: How often do you rehearse and for how long?
Víctor: Well, we try to rehearse once a week.
Kike: 2 and a half hours or so.

Plural: Apart from the music, what else do you do?
Rodrigo: I dedicate myself to music, well now I’m betting on the project, we have goals because we want to have enough gigs and leave the country, we have a vision to reach Mexico is the goal we have set, I think Victor supports me in this and before being here with them as a band I was with another band playing for money and nothing to do with this because that’s what I do for a living
Víctor: It’s important and we’ve already talked about this project going seriously and we have good wishes towards getting into full and not as a hobby in fact as Fox The Kid we have already gone to Honduras 2 times and being part of to 2 festivals, we want to keep like that. Besides that I am an entrepreneur, a designer and I have a small creative boutique with my sister.
Kike: Like Vik, I have a small company with some friends in which we are in charge of making audiovisual productions, both video photography and design, and I also work for an advertising agency.

Plural: Plans to the future
Víctor: To do more tours, more gigs through Central America, in fact we have had a invitation to visit and play in Costa Rica but it has not been anything concrete, we want to put together the exact tour when we have the album.

Plural: As independent artists where do you feel you have found the most support?
Víctor: You’re always looking for a new public but right now we want to get the attention of those who have listened to us from the beginning, its like ¨here we are and we have new songs¨ which is the most important thing that we are not playing the same; so I think that with that we have to keep them happy and the response of this show was quite good and we saw people happy and in the end that’s the important thing … now our target it’s going to be looking for more people and more branding support and some sponsorship to get to more public and to do more concerts and generate to make it self sustainable to the band.

Plural: When does the new album comes out?
Víctor: These shows that we are giving are to raise money for the album and that is why it is our interest to look and getting for a new public target, basically to educate the people who arrive how important it is for us to consume merch and albums. And this is a great call to all if they see us playing that they are always supporting us and watching the shows, because without them we do not exist.
